How has Katrina changed America? (a question posed by national public radio
)
Sadly very little
In many ways Katrina and its devastation mimics the disaster that befell
Pompeii. .
It didn't take the Army Corps of Engineers to tell the Roman population that
Vesuvius was in danger of eruption. In fact Vesuvius had erupted just
previously a year or so before and Pompeii was still in process of rebuilding when
it erupted and buried the city alive.
Man has changed very little over the centuries on where he chooses to live
and to conduct his business.
He by his very nature is more concerned with defense against his neighbors
than he is against protecting himself against any natural disaster.
History proves this
Holland for example, which is much older than the united States has been
prone to flooding since before Biblical times, It took a disastrous flood in
1954 to address that problem with a suitable dikes and levee systems.
Venice is just waiting Scientists are now telling us unless something is
done very soon it will sink and disappear.
The list goes on ,
In the United States developers continue to build right on the two largest
seismically active faults in the US, the San Andreas and New Madres with
little regard to the disastrous consequences should they trigger a large
earthquake which they say is due.
Then there is little old New York which has two major faults running
cross ways through the entire island of Manhattan (one on 125 St and one on
Water Street;) yet there is no city ,State or federal plan to inhibit the
construction of new building that goes on there .
Who is responsible for this backward thinking? We are
Who do we blame it on after all the death and destruction?
Pompeii had the luxury of the wrath OF THE GODS to blame it on
We conveniently have George Bush
