You should be able to find straw at a feed store.  I think you can find 
descriptions of various methods of thatching in texts, or on the web.  
There might be a PTN member or two who have experience.  Still, I'd go 
with wood shingle.  Romantics go gaga over thatch, I like my roofs to 
rot a little slower and last a little longer.
