don't know that I'd try that without isolation in that circuit and you don't get that just using patch 
cables I wouldn't think?

no, the serial or paralel port is not needed for tx control at all.
On voice, the vox feature works great, on cw, forgive me, I am not a cw guy,
so i can't remember what it is called, where you can set the rig to transmit
as soon as you send a tone or press the straight key, can be used with a
sound card to automatically key the radio...yes, you can use a port to
accomplish the same, but it isn't necesary with some of the sound card
programs.
CW get specifically is a sound card program and doesn't require a paralel or
serial port to key the radio, as long as you have  a vox feature.
