On voice, the vox feature works great, on cw, forgive me, I am not a cw guy, so i can't remember what it is called, where you can set the rig to transmit as soon as you send a tone or press the straight key, can be used with a sound card to automatically key the radio...yes, you can use a port to accomplish the same, but it isn't necesary with some of the sound card programs.
