Scott,

The 590 has a TX monitor to let you hear your TX audio.  Also voice 
readout of the meter as you adjust alc, mic gain,  and compression 
levels.  You do have to turn the TX monitor off to get the voice 
announcements in TX.

There is also a menu setting to let you  send your TX audio to the pc 
for recording.    You can start a recording, then  make various changes 
to bandwidth, EQ, and other stuff.   Then play it back and see what 
sounded good and what didn't.
