Jim, yes, that is the whole purpose of running a stack.  When I ordered the
stack match for that tower, I specified that the antennas could be operated
in pairs.  That is, the bottom pair, the middle pair, and the top pair.
Pairs can be added or deleted as Stan wishes.  Normally all six yagis will
be in operation, but in certain situations, the lower antennas may provide a
better signal than any of the other combinations.  There are a lot of
factors that influence what combination is the best, but in general, the
further away the station that you are working, the higher the preferred
pairings will be that provides the best signal.  The lowest yagi will be at
30 feet, and the highest at 200 feet.

Subject: Super station update

Several weeks ago Stan put up the first tower of his super 
station in
northern Florida.  a SteppIr DB18E sits at about 98 feet.  This 
week has
been devoted to digging holes and pouring the concrete for the 
next 3
towers.  All together, this week's pours totaled about 50 cubic 
yards of
high-strength concrete.  The 3 towers will be placed on their 
bases and
bolted down.  He will be able to raise the 3 towers to their full 
extention
in about 3 weeks when the concrete reaches about 90% of their 
ultimate per
square inch load ratings.  Once the 3 towers are up and 
populated, the base
and guy anchor holes will be dug and poured for the first of the 
3 200 foot
rotating towers.  That tower will hold a stack of 6 3 element 
SteppIrs,
which has never been done.  Engineers and technicians from 
SteppIr will
spend 3 or 4 days at Stan's new QTH to assemble and tune the 6 
yagis so that
they will operate at their peak performance.  Stan's so-called 
SteppIr tower
will be featured in SteppIr's advertisements.  The gain figures 
for that
stack come out to about 24 DBD on all bands 20 thru 10 meters.  
He will have
a tremendous signal, particularly when he runs the legal limit of 
1500 watts
into them.
