Tom,
You would install the tuner aid between your transceiver and your amp where
the power is low. Switch off your amp or set its controls so that your
transceiver is connected to your tuner and antenna, adjust your tuner for
the null in noise which is the lowest SWR. Now you can turn on your amp and
enjoy. The tuner aid will never see the amps high power. All you will need
is an additional short coax jumper to install the tuner aid. Before using
your amp you can test the SWR with the TW1 or the SWR meter on your 590 to
insure it is within reasonable limits.
Remember, you should turn off the tuner aid before transmitting even though
it has a protection circuit in case you forget. I wouldn't rely on this
circuit in place of turning it off consistently.
