Tom:
Many years ago I built a Heatkit SWR / power meter from the kit with a lot
of help from my long-suffering mum!
Also a very high quality 150 W per channel audio amplifier.

Hank,
Surface mount parts are newer ones which do not have wire leads.
They have tiny little contacts on there edges which are tack
soldered to very small pads on the board. It's a tricky process
for sighted folks to learn to do by hand and there is no way so
far as we know for a blind person to do it.

some kits have surface mount parts, some don't, and some
pre-install the surface mount parts for you.

However doing kits as a bat is not just being able to solder, the
hard part is reading instructions, seeing pictures in said
instructions, and identifying parts and board positions.

I've heard claims that there are blind folks who say they can do
kits but never had proof.

Most of the stuff we do is not done on printed boards, but
'point-to-point" wired on vector board, the kind that just has
holes into which you push part leads.
