Allathea,

I'd like to know a bit more about the ATWs the Free Library has. What
kind of hardware and software do you use? What aspects of the
workstations get trashed? I'm asking in order to determine what might
be done to help the workstation stand up to varied use.

I firmly believe that separate is unequal. I believe that relegating
people with disabilities to separateness succeeds mostly in keeping us
from the mainstream of society. Treating us with well-intentioned extra
care can further reinforce the notion that we can't be independent
citizens.

Parking spaces, which are further limited to those with mobility
impairments, are intended to get people who need them physically closer
to the building they wish to enter. Such parking spaces are not, in my
opinion, parallel to information workstations. One reason this is true
is because assistive technology solutions, like the curb cuts
near "handicapped" parking spaces, can be useful for all, not just
their original intended audience.

I'd love to talk with you about possible solutions to the problems you
have with your workstations. We should probably do that by direct e-
mail and not on the list, though.
