Dear all,

HAPPY NEW YEAR! I wish you all a happiness, good health, and prosperity in the New
Year.

It's been a long time I sent a posting to this list. But that's no reason for me to
make this one long (laugh). I just wanted to set the record straight regarding my
role in the management of the AAM list. True, I was one of 3 people (along with Aggo
Akyea, and Peter Munoz) responsible for running to the list in the beginning. I did
indeed continue to help for a few years, but my role has been reduced to zero in the
past year or so.

Although my name was retained in the list of the AAM list managers, I have neither
subscribed, unsubscribed, or in anyway affected anyone's subscription in probably
over a year. As a member (in name only) of the group of people responsible for
managing the list, I received error messages, subscription requests, and copies of
e-mail generated by the actions of other managers. For example, if one is subscribed
or unsubscribed by another manager, all other managers (myself included) will get a
copy of the e-mail notifying the subscriber of that action. I filtered all my mail
from Listserv (the computer program that runs the AAM list) into a mailbox that I
hardly ever open. In fact, it was a few weeks ago that I emptied it, because it was
getting too big. I wish I hadn't, because I would at least have been able to search
for any reference to Mr. Harwell's subscription.

Earlier today, I checked the St. John's University list managers page, and found that
I am no longer listed as a manager of the AAM list. The last time I got any
notification about the AAM list from Listserv was on Dec. 27, 2001, meaning that I
was removed from the managers list just a few days ago. I was not notified of my
removal as a list manager, and neither is that a big deal. Like I said, there really
was no need for my name to be on the list of managers given that I was not in any way
helping with the management of the list.

With regards the revoking of Mr. Harwell's posting privileges, I would like to
suggest that whoever did it should just tell us that he or she did it, and why. This
is not to say that I endorse Mr. Harwell's postings. I have indeed found a number of
his postings too argumentative, and leading to nowhere. Despite my disagreements
with Mr. Harwell's style of debate, I believe his posting privileges should not be
revoked without reason, because if it happens to him, it can happen to anybody. So
let's set the record straight and move on.

I also disagree with any suggestion that the AAM list is, and/or was controlled by
the Mayor's office. That's rubbish, and should be ignored.

That's about it! Again, best wishes to all for a wonderful New Year!

Katim

> If my memory serves me right, I believe upon its inception, either Katim Turay or
Aggo Akyea informed subscribers that through the help of Mr. Munoz the African
Association was able to acquire a listserve (This information is in the archives but
am too lazy to pull it up).

> To understand the need for this listserv at the time when it was established, you
should ask Aggo how he put together our emails and sent those messages with "copy to"
taking virtually a page before the intended message. It was a major step in our
communication network. I say this because I was among the first batch of subscribers
from Aggos Address book to embrace the AAM list. It was and still a commendable
effort.
