The Bacchae, Wole Soyinka's adaptation of Euripedies' classic tale comes
alive at MITCHELL THEATRE at the University of Wisconsin, Madison at 7:30pm
on March 19-21, 24-28, 1999.
The play is directed by Professor Femi Osofisan and the dance is
choreographed by Folabo Ajayi-Soyinka. Both of them are seasoned academics
and theatre artists.  Femi Osofisan is based at the University of Ibadan,
Nigeria and Folabo Ajayi-Soyinka is based at the Dept of Theatre and Film
and Women's Studies Program at the University of Kansas.

Bacchae has been described as "A CELEBRATION OF LIFE BLOODY and TUMUTUOUS"
or "AN EXTRAVAGANT RITE OF THE HUMAN AND SOCIAL PSYCHE".

This production is very important to the Madison community, especially the
African community , because this appears to be the first full scale
production of any play by an African by the University of Wisconsin, Madison
in recent memory.  In short , it seems the Department of Theatre and Drama
of the university has now come of age in terms of the spread in production.
We hope that many more will follow.  Therefore we invite members of the
public and especailly the African and African-American Community to make
this production a success.
