BBC News Africa

South Africa is currently facing its worst drought since 1982, with
livestock dying as a result, and water restrictions imposed on the main
city Johannesburg.

The BBC's Nomsa Maseko is in Free State province gathering material for a
report on the drought's impact on farmers.

She and her colleague have been helping local farmer Thuso Kalane rescue
his cow, called Kgantsho, which had been stuck in the mud for two days.

Kgantsho got lost looking for water and food.

Mr Kalane has already lost six cows in the past month. He fears losing his
entire herd and farm if the rains don't come soon.

In normal times Nomsa would be sitting underwater in the place she's chosen
to record her radio piece, but the reservoir has run dry as a result of the
drought.
