The Wisconsin State Patrol promotes highway safety and enhances the quality of life for all Wisconsin citizens and visitors by providing professional, competent and compassionate law enforcement services. Some of the services provided are regulation of traffic, prevention of highway crashes, motor carrier safety assistance, school bus inspection, and crash reconstruction. Other services include aid to local law enforcement agencies through civil disturbance countermeasures, natural disaster recovery support, communication services and chemical testing services for drivers suspected of being under the influence of alcohol or other drugs. 
This recruitment will be used to fill approximately 40-45 vacancies located throughout the state.  Geographical placement for Trooper and Inspector positions shall be determined by academy class rank with the person having the highest class rank selecting first. Therefore, selected applicants must be willing to accept any location and either classification (Trooper or Inspector) throughout the state. Successful applicants will participate in approximately 23 weeks of PAID training at the State Patrol Academy in Fort McCoy, Wisconsin beginning October 6, 2013.  Upon completion of the academy, applicants may be eligible for moving expense reimbursement, temporary lodging and a stipend of $1,000.
Job Duties:   State Patrol Trooper Duties: Observe the operation and condition of vehicles to ascertain compliance; collect, document and preserve evidence; take proper enforcement action; make criminal arrests; conduct field sobriety tests; administer first aid; and provide assistance to motorists. State Patrol Inspector Duties:Weigh and inspect trucks to ensure compliance; inspect safety equipment and documents; apprehend trucks that fail to stop; collect, document and preserve evidence; take proper enforcement action for motor carrier violations, traffic violations and other crimes observed; make criminal arrests; conduct field sobriety tests; conduct and complete Motor Carrier Safety Assistance Program inspections reports; and conduct school and motor bus inspections.
Special Notes:   Applicants must have 60 college credits prior to commencing employment at the State Patrol Academy on October 6, 2013.  Applicants requesting a waiver (up to 30), should download the College Credit Waiver Application and submit to the Department of Justice (DOJ) for review.  Please note - requests for waivers are only reviewed four times a year and are difficult to obtain.  Applicants seeking waivers should complete the form and submit to DOJ as soon as possible. 
A physical agility test and a criminal background check will be conducted during the hiring process. Applicants with felony convictions or misdemeanor domestic violence convictions will not be considered unless they have received a pardon. Due to the nature of these positions, a pre-employment medical examination (including drug screening) and psychological testing will be required to determine the presence of any conditions which might adversely affect performance as a State Patrol Trooper or Inspector. In addition, finalists must meet the following requirements:  
 
	* Minimum uncorrected vision of 20/100 in each eye.  Vision must be correctable to 20/20. Weak eye corrected vision can be 20/30, with binocular vision of 20/20. 
	* No more than a 20 decibel hearing loss (uncorrected) in either ear at 1000, 2000, 3000 and 4000 hertz.  
	* Males who are between the ages of 18 and 25 must be registered with the Selective Service as mandated in Wis. Stats. 230.143.
	* Any person not a citizen or national of the United States is considered an alien.  In order for an alien to accept employment in the United States, he or she must be in possession of documentation issued by the United States citizenship and Immigration Services which authorizes employment.  

Appointment is contingent upon passing these tests and requirements.  
Job Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:   Observation and recall; basic mathematics; analytical skills including reasoning and problem solving; interpersonal responsiveness and reliability; oral and written communications; effective work habits; and ability to read and interpret complex written materials such as laws, policies and procedures.
How To Apply:   These positions require applicants to complete a multiple-choice examination. Examinations will be administered at three (3) locations: 
 
	* Waukesha County Technical College (WCTC)  on Friday, June 14 and Saturday, June 15, 2013.  WCTC is located at 800 Main Street in Pewaukee. 
	* Hill Farms State Transportation Building on Monday, June 17, 2013.  Hill Farms is located at 4802 Sheboygan Avenue in Madison.  
	* Northcentral Technical College (NTC) in Wausau on Friday, June 21 and Saturday, June 22, 2013.  NTC is located at 1000 W Campus Drive in Wausau.  

In order to register for an exam, you must complete the on-line questionnaire. In the questionnaire, you will be asked the date and time you will be able to complete the exam. Although we will attempt to accommodate all scheduling preferences, you may be scheduled for an alternate date and/or time if necessary. 
Multiple-choice exams will be scored on-site. Immediately following, those applicants that pass the multiple-choice exam will participate in an interview. Please make necessary work and personal arrangements in advance. 
After completing the on-line questionnaire, you will receive an automated email confirming completion of your registration.  A second email will follow within one week which will contain detailed information on what to expect the day of the exam. The second email will also direct you to an application and release form that must be downloaded and brought with you to the exam. In addition, please be prepared to bring the following with you the date of the examination: an unofficial copy of your high school and college transcripts, two copies of your resume and two to four letters of recommendation. Veterans should also be prepared to bring a copy of their form DD-214.
