I assume that the cds you have trouble with are CDRs that you have recorded.
The real problem is that the optical return from a cdr is less defined (less
contrasty? <g>) then that from a pressed cd. You are right, the drives (the
newer ones anyway) are all built to standards and they should read cdrs
reliably. Unfortunately this isn't always true.
I had the same complaint while using "Cyberdrive" cd readers. I switched to
"Mitsumi" drives for all my machines and have had no problems since. I would
have hoped that Creative Labs would be reliable, but 24x is a few generations
old, perhaps the newer units would do ok.
