Thanks Richard.

This was enough to do it for this unit.  I had tried alcohol with no
success, apparently the soaking was the key.

There have been many responses to this, some of which mention that canon
make some of the HP printer internals.  This may be, but the things that are
nice about HP are

1. Every time you replace the ink well, you replace the print head [no
drying up over time].

2.  You replace an ink well far less frequently than with a canon.
