This message is often an indication that the hard disk parameters
are not correctly set in the CMOS. Compaqs are kind of different
when it comes to getting into the machine setup--some have a "2
beep" signal after which you press F10 to get into setup.
Whatever the method, it will be necessary to get into (or run)
setup to see that your hard disk parameters are set correctly. If
your CMOS battery has 'died', you may have lost the "settings"
for your hard disk, or they may be incorrect. If this is the case
you will get a message indicating the operating system can't be
found. (There are usually about 46 "stock" settings and number 47
"USER", where you must either enter the necessary numbers, or,
where an auto-detect will enter the numbers for you.) If it is
necessary to enter cylinders, landing zone, etc. manually, check
for a web page listing the settings for your model of hard disk
drive. [Other posters may be able to help w/ a specific page for
hard disk parameters--perhaps www.tomshardware.com or a link from
it.] Obviously,if a dead CMOS battery is responsible for lost
settings, replace it.
