The following is for USA/Western Electric/Bell Phone Systems only.
The telephone company has not made any EFFECTIVE use of the
third and fourth wires on a single line phone since the late 1950's.
When they abandoned them for a two wire set-up, they started
to use the existing "extra" wires for such things as the low voltage
AC power supplies for the "Princess Phone" lights and other phones
in their LIMITED Designer Series of phones. If your location is from that
time, or before, you might want to look around for the little Western
Electric transformers. Do not unplug anything unless you know what it is.
You might "knock-out" an ALARM SYSTEM or something.
If you have a cordless phone on the same line as computer,
or anything else you can get rid of, try to "clean up" the line that
way too. I short disconnection might prove surprising.
