Hello all -- I had requests for a summary of our gf travels in
Greece. Briefly, at the Bacacos pharmacy in Omonia Square in
Athens we found rice cakes, but all other items had some dairy derivative
in them, which is problematic for my son. Not much luck at the
health food stores either.

Also, we found that formerly ubiquitous rice has largely disappeared
as a standard item at least in tavernas. My son lived mostly on
bifteki (yummy spiced hamburgers) and patates teganetes (french
fries), though he also fell in love with fish while there -- easily
done as it was fresh and beautifully cooked. I did very well with
mezzedes (appetizers) and entrees, esp. at places where taromasalata
(fish roe dip) was made with mashed potatos instead of bread as a
base. Also fell back on french fries as a substitute for bread in
dipping into the mezzedes -- luckily was able to swim every day to
counteract all that good food! The Aegean was wonderful for
swimming and boating, on a side note, none of the scary shoreline
phenomena of the Atlantic coast whether natural or manmade.

So, my thumbnail advice is that if you travel with a child, pack a
box with his/her favorite treats, and ingredients for cooking. Our
box -- quinoa-corn pasta, gf flour, Crisco butter flavor, fruit
rollups, cereal, rice dream, popcorn -- was a lifesaver, as was the
kitchen where we stayed. It was heavy, but then again, coming
back without it was delightful. And I was able to bake up some
things for the long plane ride home, without which the 10-hour
daytime flight would have been unbearable. The kosher meals
we ordered on TWA (no gf/df meals available) had pasta and flour-
based sauces.

Happy travels,

Elizabeth
