Hi Jeff: The FT-450AT and D do have the speech built in and its enabled in 
the menu. Not sure on the 450 but I owned the 450AT and have researched 
extensively the D. I wouldn't hesitate on either the AT or D models if you 
know of 1 in good condition. The make a nice compact 160/6M FD rig.
