FDA Warns Serious Allergic Reactions Possible With Acne Products

Acne is not only one of the most common skin conditions known, but it is also a skin condition associated with being painful, embarrassing, and frustrating.

And now, it appears the treatments advertised through mass media as being the cure-all for acne, are a threat themselves!

On Wednesday, June 25, 2014, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a warning on how certain over-the-counter (OTC) topical acne products can cause "serious and potentially life-threatening" allergic reactions or severe irritation.

The "products of concern", as identified in the FDA’s statement, are marketed under different brand names such as ‘Proactive’, ‘Neutrogena’, ‘MaxClarity’, ‘Oxy’, ‘Ambi’, ‘Aveeno’, ‘Clean & Clear’, and as store brands.

According to the FDA, these products are sold as gels, lotions, face washes, solutions, cleansing pads, toners, face scrubs, and other products.

Interesting enough, not only are these medications, which are advertised as “acne treatments”, now linked to serious allergic reactions, they also do not address one of the most common, and most over-looked, causes of acne.

Did you know food allergies are considered to be one of, if not the number one, cause of acne? Eating a food to which the body is allergic leads to a continuous toxic reaction. In such cases, the immune system fights the food as if it were an invading organism. This can cause inflammation in the skin (and many other conditions), as well as the need to eliminate the toxin.

Even more frustrating is how not only immune responses to food proteins such as gluten and gliadin a leading cause behind acne, but an immune response to ANY food proteins can be the causes of one’s acne and other skin conditions.

So what can one do?
