Oh, another oddity is that my MFJ-993B tuner, for 160 through 10 meters, 
will tune my vertical on most of 6 meters.

Speaking of six meters, it is open as I type this into Mexico and the south

Don't underestimate your current HF antennas on 6 meters either.
If they tune they might work.  If the band is open, it is open.
