A little history about myself. As you perhaps know from the other list, I
am a convert. My mother was also a protestant.
When I was a small child Braille books were exceedingly expensive. Not to
mention the space it took to hold them. My mother got the Mennonites to
purchase for me a Braille King James version of the bible. Which was gotten
from the American Bible Society. In the back of each of the 18 volumes was
a plate asking that in the case of our death, that we return it back to the
society. Which, to me, serves to illustrate the small number of Braille
bibles there must have been. In any case, as it was the only Braille book
in the house, when I got a poor grade in reading, my mother made me rise an
hour earlier in the morning. That I might read a chapter of the bible
allowed to her before the two and a half hour trip to my school. I was
perhaps 7 years old at the time. If nothing else, that taught me to get
better grades in reading after that. Can you imagine a 7 year old girl
reading aloud the story of lots drunken debauchery with his daughters? Talk
about early sex education. In any case, there is an outfit which offers the
King James version as a talking Solar bible. I enquired after it for a
friend, and was told they were offering the Braille bibles free of charge
now. If one had 6 feet of space in which to put it. I suspect the back
plate is also missing now.
