Mike and all:
While I have used System Restore with Microsoft Security Essentials with no problems outside of reupdating the Microsoft antivirus product after the restore was finished, I have no knowledge of the ESet package. Therefore, I probably would, if I were in your shoes, turn off the ESet Security before attempting to restore the computer. If the computer cannot restore itself because the antivirus file is on it, when it comes back up (and the default setting in XP is that it will come back up, no matter what), you will get a message saying "Restore unsuccessful".
Good luck!

I have a question about using the system restore feature that is part of
Windows XP. Before running it, should I disable Eset Smart Security,
which is the security package I have on this pc, so that it will not
attempt to block the restore; or does system restore automatically
override this kind of system protection of a antivirus/firewall package?
