Mike,
  I think I've solved my problem.  When I installed the fan assembly, the
heatsink caught a ~1/16 inch 'lip' that's next to the left side of the
chip.  So, the heatsink was not making  solid contact with the chip,
causing it to overheat.  What made it tricky to diagnose is the fact that
95 causes the chip to run hotter than Linux.  So I couldn't get Linux to
complain until I did something ereally cpu intensive, like recompiling ~20
MB of source code for the kernel. Anyway, I reseated the heatsink and it
appears to be ok for the moment.
