You don't need HRD to use the IC703, I use it daily with great success using
the QSY'r keypad and the speech synthesizer, but, HRD is fun to use and
makes getting through the menus a snap.

You shouldn't need ham radio deluxe with the IC-703, that will take the
voice read out chip so far as I know. The specs over all, from someone who
posted a review based on bench testing those 2, favor the Icom as well. In
fact, I'll send you the link when I get home, but the yaesu looked like a
real peace of junk when bench tested. I am on vacation until the weekend but
will send that link when I get home.
