Tom's description is correct.  Just to add to it, CAPTCHA is a forced 
acronym that stands for:

Completely Automated Public Turing Test to Tell Computers and Humans 
Apart.

Essentially, it is designed to be a test that you are actually a human and 
not some computer pretending to be a human.  Judging from some of the 
personalities, or lack there of,  of people I work with, I believe that 
some computers have beaten the test.
