Yes, and to add to John's post, You need to make sure you have the correct 
setting in Menu 9.  That turns the jacks either to speaker mike, TNC, or PC 
Interface.  The low tone (default) is what you want for speaker-mike.

Yes, that's the wrong jack. you need to use the smaller plug, not the 1.8,
the 1.16 one is what you need so you need an adapter. It's not so much
nontraditional as inconvenient. A lot of the commercial gear that uses a
speaker/mic jack like that has the kenwood configuration.
