I got 4 responses to my question as to whether Xyzal is GF. Two
respondents said they did an internet search and found a website that
quoted someone who had contacted the manufacturer asking if Xyzal was
GF. The response was that Xyzal is not made from any gluten
ingredients but is not certified as gluten free. One person said
that it was GF and she used it and liked it.

I finally reached the manufacturer today and had a lengthy
conversation with the medical representative. She gave me the same
answer as that on the website -- the ingredients are GF but the drug
isn't certified as GF. She could not tell me any details about why
Xyzal might contain gluten -- she did not know anything about the
equipment or facility in which it was manufactured nor whether there
was any risk of contamination-- nothing that would enable me to
assess the risk. She said they don't do any gluten testing of the
product because it would be lengthy and expensive. Without testing,
the company won't say that Xyzal is certified as gluten free.

This frustrates me. If drug companies like UCB, who makes Xyzal,
are concerned about improving their patients' health, why don't they
know what is in their products? There is something wrong with this
picture. I say we organize support to promote allergen and gluten
labeling in drugs as our next big legislative priority.
