Sounds reasonable to me.  On long 12 volt runs, we use to use welding 
cable to prevent voltage drop.  And of corse, there is the noise issue. 
Another trick we use to do was run rg8 so we'd have a shielded power run.
I'd say your mechanic is on the right track.
