Hi Linda,

Thanks - I was confusing the word ritual with belief systems and you meaning rituals as in acts people do repeatly as a private type ritual. Now we are on the same page!!

Exactly right. The way I've explained it to groups is that the ritual
becomes the repetitive act whatever that is. If the abuser locks you
in the closet, holds a knife to your throat and then abuses you the
repeated locking in the closet, or knife threat becomes part of the
ritual. Also in families that attribute everything good to god and
everything bad to satan it is easier for the child to believe it is
satan than dad whom the child is dependent on for their very life.
Alternatively the abusers themselves often say this is not me, it is
satan in me. The perpetrator can also believe it is satan in him.
And then there is the really horrible stuff where people like group
sex and dress up and there are clubs in every city where you can go
to access this type of sex
called bondage and dominance. The themes that are prominent are the
authoritarian ones like the priest and the little girl or the cop or
satan, so why people cannot grasp that this can happen also to
children does not make sense to me. The fact is we do a lousy job of
protecting children whether they are disabled or not.
