No, this is not the case.  The '480 is a different animal.  If you ignore 
the TS480, then all their other 13.8 volt HF radios use the same cord.  By 
the way, it uses the same pinout that Icom uses with their power 
supplies.  My sister actually has an Icom IC706 Mk IIg running on a Kenwood 
PS50 power supply because she didn't want to buy another power supply when 
she replaced her Kenwood TS440S.
