Colin is right.  I can't tell you how many around have their shack on 
their belt.  An ht is all they own. Hts are wonderful if you really need 
the portability.  If you're going to run it mobile, it is kind of a hassle 
by the time you add a mike and external antenna, and perhaps a power cord. 
It really depends on what you can afford, and what your primary use of the 
radio will be.  If you really need the portability, go for an ht.  If 
you'll hve the radio either in the car or perhaps in the same place in the 
house on an outside antenna, get a mobile rig.
