    Holly:

You should have a pretty good shot at hitting the repeater with 5 watts,
especially if you have a good outdoor antenna.  The antenna that comes with
the radio, though, may not be enough.  Some of it depends on exactly where
the repeater is located, what kind of antennas they are using at the
repeater site, etc..

Maybe you could contact another local ham in your area to see what is/her
experiences are.
