Freedom Scientific offers a charger for the new Pac Mate that can use a
cigarette lighter connection. It probably can be done, using stuff designed
for DC in the house, and stuff designed to be plugged in for charging
outside with batteries since those AC plugs just convert to DC a lot of the
time anyways. On the new Pac Mates, spare batteries aren't an option as the
pack is internal.
