the most popular one is
speakup
this works with command line linux only, development of access to
linux desk top environments like gnome is in a very primative
state so far.
There is another solution however, if you have a dos machine, or
probably even a windoes machine with a screen reader handy, you
can connect this accessible machine via a seria port to the
linux box's serial port and then tell linux to do its work
through that serial port.
again, works quite well for command line linux which gives you a
huge variety of software for free.
This all will most likely require a bit of installation help from
a linux guru but information on the hows is readilly
available on the speakup web site

there is also
brltty
a program which allows braille displays to access linux.
there is a learning curve of course, but the software is all free
and no worries about viruses and spyware.
