Hi Cody:

The authorization disk behaved exactly as it is intended to. As I understand
it, the authorization does two things: (1) shows you what the code was in a
box on the screen (as you've noted), and (2) places that code in the
registry.

Now, the only thing you need to do is to place the JAWS disk itself in the
computer and follow the prompts to complete the upgrade. However, (and I do
mean "however"; i.e., note this well, that you may not be able to handle the
upgrade without sighted assistance. Let me explain. (And this is why I'm
sending this email to both you and the list at large.) As I think you know,
you are asked to disable any antivirus or internet security programs when
you do a new JAWS installation. Okay, most times I ignore that, as I did in
this instance, but that act of disobedience did not cause the problem I was
confronted with when I installed my JAWS 6.0 (ILM version) as I'm about to
explain.) I put the authorization disk in first as you did. Then I put in
the program disk itself, and followed all the prompts. The installation was
completed successfully, even with my norton antivirus and norton internet
security running. Then, I was told that I had to restart my computer. Fine;
no problem; I can and will comply with that request, but, of course, the
norton programs are going to load up and start as part of the reboot
process, as they should. I rebooted the computer, and heard only a "bonk";
no JAWS, no speech; no way to determine what the heck was going on. (Oh, and
forget about narrator; not gonna help you; we [me and JAWS tech support
tried mightily].) As a blind person living alone, I had to go downstairs to
the condo building lobby and wait around until I heard the voice of someone
I knew sufficiently well to ask...nay...beg them to come up to my condo for
a second to read the screen so that I could get the problem resolved and
continue being productive on my "work at home" day; not really the way I
like living my life, but hey, you do what you gotta do. Okay, the point of
all this is simply that when you reboot, norton jumps out in front of JAWS
with its security warnings, recommended actions, etc., and given that you
have to reboot to complete the registration process, whether or not you
disable norton (or its equivalent) during the install process itself is
irrelevant.

Lastly, even under the new internet licensing management scheme, I believe
you only get to install the JAWS program on five computers; i.e., you get
five keys. Its just that these keys are tracked centrally by freedom
scientific on their special website rather than being tracked (loaded from
and placed back on to) a 3.5 floppy disk.

Hope this helps!

John
