EASI's online course:  Designing Accessible Course Content Using Familiar
Software begins July 5 and runs for 4 weeks.

Course Instructors: Norman Coombs and Dick Banks
Everyone who completes the course will receive an EASI certificate of
completion. Those requesting it will receive 3 continuing education units
for doing the course work.. Finally, this course is an optional course for
those working for the EASI/USM Certificate In accessible Information
Technology.

Course registration is $350 with a %20 discount for students and
participants from overseas.

Course Description
This new course is created for faculty, instructional design staff and
anyone providing support for course content designers who has limited
technical know-how and who wants to make their course materials accessible
without having to learn specialized software or become a technology guru.
It is not a theoretical or principles course; it is practical and hands-on.
The course will utilize regular, interactive web conferences to give
detailed demonstrations of tips and tricks using familiar software to
design accessible content. Lesson assignments will lead participants to
actually create accessible content using familiar tools like Word,
PowerPoint, excell, web browsers, etc. Participants will discover that, in
the process of designing accessible content, their material will be clearer
and better for everyone.  ** You can do it, and we will help you.
Accessibility does not have to be an arduous task. Courseware systems let
designers put content online without learning HTML code. This course will
permit you to make that content accessible for users with various
disabilities and who are using specialized software without your becoming a
web designer.

What do you need to participate in class web, voice conferences?
To be able to listen and talk online using our interactive, web conference,
you will need: Windows, recent version of Internet Explorer, speakers and a
mic.

Course syllabus:

Lesson 1: Introduction
Part 1: How do students with disabilities access online course content?
Part 2: What is accessible course content and who says so?
Part 3: Where can I find Section 508 standards and WAI guidelines?
Part 4: Can I do this with my favorite software?
Assignment: Personal introductions
Following assignments will require participants to produce a sample of
accessible content related to that lesson.

Lesson 2: Powerpoint accessibility for the web
Part 1: Extracting PowerPoint content into a Word document
Part 2: PowerPoint Color contrast, font style and size
Part 3: Using an Office plugin to produce accessible PowerPoint for the web
Assignment: Create an accessible PowerPoint and post it to the web

Lesson 3: General Online Content Design Tips
Part 1: Understand the strengths of the online system and maximize them in
your
content design
Part 2: modularize with small paragraphs and simple sentence structure
Part 3: Use simple page design with white spaces and avoid clutter
Part 4: Be sure all design features are relevant to the content
Assignment: What online system will you use and how can you maximize its
features

Lesson 4: Creating accessible PDF
Part 1: What's the difference between PDF and other electronic text formats?
Part 2: Adobe's accessible PDF features
Part 3: Tips for creating the most accessible PDF documents
Assignment: Scan a print page into an accessible PDF document

Lesson 5: Word and Excel accessibility for the web
Part 1: Scanning print text into accessible electronic format
Part 2: How to handle pictures
Part 3: How to handle Columns, tables, spreadsheets and charts
ssignment: Use Word or Excel to create 2 accessible web pages

Lesson 6: Understanding Simple Accessible Web Pages
Part 1: Ten quick tips for accessible Web design
Part 2: Accessible Web checkers
Assignment: Analyze an accessibility report

Lesson 7: Designing and Repairing Simple Accessible Web Pages
Part 1: "Quick and dirty" Web pages using Word
Part 2: Using WYSIWYG editors
Part 3: Using simple accessibility repair tools
Assignment: Create a simple web page including an accessible image

Lesson 8: Delivering accessible content using video and audio conferencing
Part 1 Similarities and differences between online and face-to-face
synchronous
presentations
Part 2 Use more than one communication mode
Part 3: Modularize and keep it simple
Part 4: provide opportunities for audience feedback and questions
Part 5: Special problems and solutions
Assignment Look at Accessibility of two conference systems and tell which you
think is best and why
