In response subject restaurants in downtown SF, I found a restaurant in the
neighborhood of West Portal, easily reached by city transit metro, the Muni.
  It is called Sabella's and it's specialty is seafood such as crab
cioppino, mussels and clams, and fish (as well as meat and poultry).  The
chef Mike can be reached at 415-753-3130 (53 West Portal Ave., SF, CA
94127).  He was very interested in the gluten-free diet and because he was
concerned himself about even the wine he put in my steamed mussels, he
called the manufacturer.  He was also immediately aware about
cross-contamination concerns.  He also asked me to look at some of his
ingredients which he was wondering whether contained gluten such as blue
cheese and crumbly gorgonzola, and his enriched polenta. He even asked to
purchase one of my GF pastas so he could try it in his restaurant.  I
enjoyed the food and I would recommend this very conscientious and
accommodating restaurant where I felt safe.
