I bought the FT-2800M because it has a pretty large display, one I can, for
the most part read.

It certainly isn't too blind user friendly as it has few buttons and 33
memories one must use for functions knobs used to handle.

Using assistance from a sighted person, I am attempting to program a
repeater in the Washington area which transmits on 147.000 and accepts
signals at 146.400. Of course, the rig wants to transmit on
147.600. Well, we spent over an hour and made a dozen attempts to change
its settings using the manual. No luck.

Does anyone have a modern Yaesu and experience programming odd splits?

Hoping!
