Thanks to everybody who responded. Here's a summary:

Although debated, all alcohol and vinegar is distilled and therefore gluten
free. You still have to avoid malt vinegar because the malt flavoring is added
after the distillation process. The same is true of all flavored vinegars
and extracts. The manufacturer may need to be contacted to make sure that the
flavoring does not contain wheat.

All McCormicks extracts and spices are gluten free. Their extracts are
derived from corn or synthetic alcohol.

Krogers uses synthetic alcohol and Tones is gf. Watkins lists 3 flavors that
are gluten free but all their extracts have been used by some on the list
without any side effects. Also recommended are Spice Island and Publix brands.

Homemade vanilla extract can be made by putting vanilla beans in the bottle
of vodka made from potatoes and letting it sit in a dark cupboard for several
months.

Miss Roben's catalog was recommended for gf and egg free products
(www.missroben.com) as well as Carol Fenster's books for special diets - "Special Diet
Solutions" and "Special Diet Celebrations"

The Canadian Celiac Assoc. (www.celiac.ca) and Shelley Case's book,
"Gluten-Free Diet: A Comprehensive Resource Guide' (www.glutenfreediet.ca) are
additional resources for obtaining information on the gluten free diet.

Another excellent GF forum with knowledgeable people, including doctors with
CD, an extensive GF product list and over a thousand GF recipes:

Sharon
