Hi, Lou, here.
Harvey, I had the same misgivings initially. I had held my Advanced ticket
for 19 years, and in that time had not cracked a theory book or calculated
anything more advanced then the length of a dipole or a little Ohm's law.
You've probably been reading my posts back to Tom. I took the exam under
the current exam pool. It isn't that bad. The biggest thing that helps is
to get the materials in an accessible format--and that is a little hard for
the ARRL materials. I wish they would burn a PDF copy on CD and slip it
inside the cover of their manuals, or make a CD version purchaseable [is
that a word?]. I was fortunate enough to work with four very dedicated
fellows who went to great pains to make sure that everyone in the group
understood the materials, and our entire class passed.
But, like I was telling Tom, what did the trick for me was getting a hold
of the Gordon West tapes, and figuring out what the questions were like
that I was going to have to deal with, and figuring out the strategy that I
would use for each question to figure out the answer. I think if you do
the preparation in advance, and are willing to dedicate some serious time,
you'll be surprised at the result. But, that is the key--be willing to
dedicate a few hours each week for ten weeks or so, because I think it'll
be a lot harder if you just try to spend a half dozen hours memorizing the
pool.
