Anemia is the most common symptom experienced by people with celiac
disease, and sometimes the only recognized symptom. In an Italian study
70% of the children with celiac disease were found to have iron
deficiency anemia. This study also suggested that anemic adults who do
not respond to iron supplements should be screened for celiac disease.
The Canadian Celiac Association is conducting a major celiac health
survey The pilot study was done in Ottawa and over 44% had anemia prior
to diagnosis of celiac disease. It will be interesting to see the
results of the national survey with over 3700 people. Stay tuned!
Anemia from Vitamin B12 or folic acid deficiency can also occur in
celiac disease. Therefore, the American Gastroenterological Association
has recommended that a diagnosis of celiac disease should be considered
when unexplained iron, folic acid or B12 deficiency is found.
