I've been GF for over 5 months and it has been going well. A few days ago I decided to make chocolate chip cookies (for the first time since being GF) I used Pamela's baking mix (great stuff!) and I bought the chocolate chips from a bulk section in a tiny local market. The chips were in a gallon jar and I had to pour them into a baggy. It is possible that there might have been flour dust on the counter top where I set the jar. I later talked to the man who loads the bins and he assured me that no "grain sweetened" choc chips had been added to the jar.
I got a strong reaction soon after sampling just a few of the choc. chips..a very "tight" gas feeling - that took about four hours to subside. Sometimes I just had to lay down to handle it, but some of the time I could function. This was common for me before being GF (nearly daily with varying degrees of intensity).I've only had this happen a few times since being GF - and it seems to be after only trace amounts...say from "natural flavoring" or "artificial flavoring" in gum, or something. I guess I am coming to grips with this celiac thing and learning that I must be one of those "sensitive" ones.
Have any of you had a reaction from something so minor? I guess I need to "get real". We have been very, very careful - but not paranoid...but now I will need to consider what we purchase from bulk bins...
My son, age 9 and celiac, reacted by having a return of irritability that has been absent since he went GF 2 months ago..
Thanks,
Mary
