I note that you say "some success", and that you must try to find one in the junk bin at PC shows. You are also a systems engineer. How many junked drives identical to this guy's drive would he have to find and buy to get a working board? What I am saying is that it is not cost effective to do such a thing with drive prices so low. When will your repaired drive fail if you could get it to work again?

I've had some success with changing the board, but it must be from an identical drive, same size etc. You can sometimes pick them up from PC shows in the junk bins. You are unlikely to get a new one.

>I seriously don't think you can buy a circuit board for a hard drive, and if you could, I seriously don't think you could just remove the old one and put a new one on it. Even if you could, the expense, time, and expertise, necessary to do that would dwarf the cost of a newer, larger, and faster drive. You can get a 20 gig 7200 rpm ATA 100 drive for barely a $100. The drive is toast, time to move on.
