No, for DAE or "ripping", (Digital Audio Extractions of
the information). You can assume you are "ripping"
when the sound comes off a CD much faster than the
time it would take to play the same CD. (7 min vs. 80 min.)

If you are inputting analog signals from a tape or other
type of analog source, yes, maybe...
I use a very basic SoundBlaster 16 for this, and it sounds
fine, (to me...).

If you are hearing some problems with CDRW as opposed
to CD-R, that is a different subject. It has to do with the
way your media (the disks) "get along with" your burner
AND your player(s).  There is a lot of room for mismatches
and incompatibility.
