Marshall,

Have you looked into your CMOS settings to make sure the IDE drives are on
Auto Detect?

Try checking your master/slave settings again.  You didn't say what brand
the 6 gig drive was - many have a stand alone setting that doesn't work as a
master and will prevent the slave from being identified.
