You need to have networking enabled and configured on both machines for
them to "see" each other. On the XP machine, go to Control Panel/Network
Connections and right-click on Local Area Connections. There must be a
protocol installed, "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)". You also need "File
and Printer Sharing". I assume that your network card is already
recognized. Select the TCP/IP protocol and go to Properties. Check the
IP address. If it says "Obtain an IP address automatically", change it
to "Use the following IP address" and set the IP address to 192.168.0.1
and Subnet mask to 255.255.255.0. This may already be there.

Go back to Control Panel and select System and chose the "Computer Name"
tab. Click the Change... Button and enter a Computer name. Click the
Workgroup radio button and type in a name for your network - the word
NETWORK is ok. Click OK and that should finish with the XP machine.

On the Win98 machine, you need to right-click on the "Network
Neighborhood" icon on the desktop and select properties. You should also
find a TCP/IP protocol listed there. If you don't already have the
Network Neighborhood icon or a protocol listed, then you will need to do
a complete network installation by using your Win98 install disk. After
getting the Networking installed, set the IP address for the Win98
machine to 192.168.0.2 and subnet mask to 255.255.255.0. There is a
button on the network properties dialog that says "Share Files and
Printers". Click on the button and select File Sharing. I don't have a
Win98 machine in front of me, but I believe that you should have an
Identification tab. There you need to give your computer a name and also
indicate a workgroup name which MUST be the same as the one you gave
your XP machine. Reboot the Win98 machine. (XP does not require a
reboot)

To access the Win98 machine, use Windows Explorer and right-click on the
C drive and select "Share" from the list. Note the share name that you
use. Repeat the process for any other hard drive letters that you have
using a different share name for each. Using the default C, D, etc is
fine. After this is done, you should be able to see the shared drives in
Network Neighborhood of you XP computer.

Hope this gets you going. Good luck.

Peter

Recently purchased an XP machine, Presario 5430 with T10/100 card, and
installed new T10/100 card in older Win98SE machine. Hooked the two
together with the crossover cable and booted both up. Now what? I
expected the XP machine to have the 98 machines files etc on it as a
seperate drive. Obviously, I am missing something....Anybody know what?!
Please keep the solution simple for simple minds. TIA.Vern.
