Either piece of hardware will link all three machines, and either will link
all three to the internet through a single high speed connection such as a
cable modem or DSL. We just did the same thing here with 6 machines and a
peer to peer Win98 network. However, the advantage of a router is that it
puts a hardware firewall between your machines and the internet virus
attacks that randomly seek out unprotected web addresses. We did not have
software firewalls up on all machines when we first put in a cable modem
connection to our existing peer to peer net, and within two hours we had
contracted a web bourne virus on two machines that had shared drives. You
can rely on software like Zonealarm alone if you want to, but the router is
not terribly different in price and affords much more protection.
