I have a Gateway 966 running Windows ME. The computer came with a ethernet card and a BCM v.90 56k modem. I have Cable and removed the ethernet card that came with the computer and put in the ethernet card from my previous computer. It immeidately found the new card I've been using the computer for several months with just the normal computer problems.

Two nights ago, out of the blue, I rebooted and received the windows saying that new hardware was found. It showed that it found a new ethernet card contorller and I allowed it to find the new drivers. It was unable to so I hit cancel. The next window showed it found a PCI card with the same results.

After the computer finished booting, Thankfully I was still connected to the Internet via my Cable ethernet card. Later I tried to use my fax program and it showed my modem wasn't working and that it may be already in use.

I deleted the modem and Windows was unable to find it and unable to reinstall the drivers. In the properties section I have the dreaded yellow question marks next to the PCI Ethernet Contoller and the PCI Card. In the Network Adapters, I show Intel 21041 Based PCI Ethernet Adapter along with the Dial-Up Adapter.

As the computer sits now, I show no Modem. I downloaded the software for the BCM v.90 56k modem but upon installing, it stopped responding apparently because it couldn't find the modem.

Does anyone have any ideas what may have happened? I don't recall changing anything before the reboot that caused the change. Any suggestions on fixing this problem?

TIA
