Your hard drive may not necessarily be fried.  the ide connecting cable could have come loose or may be defective.  First, try disconnecting the cable and then reconnecting.  Then start the machine to see if the problem has been corrected.  If not, the ide cable may be defective.  Try using a new cable, start the machine and the problem most likely will be corrected.
